- Best for getting into rhythm: Ho Hey
- Best to fire me up: Kill Your Heroes
- Most likely to make me laugh (tie): Tusk and Sexy and I Know It
- Most likely to make me sing along: Lonesome
- Most likely to spur me into playing air drums while running: Little Black Submarines
- On there longest - seven years! - and therefore an appropriate title: Can't Let Go
- Newest: Home
- Most likely to skip (three-way tie): End Love, Pumped Up Kicks, Waltz #2
I can't explain what makes something good for me to run to. My only firm criteria, I guess, is that it has to be rock or pop. Drums help. Jack White helps. A lot of things are on there for sentimental reasons - concerts I went to, videos I love, the person who introduced to the song to me, etc.; even if it's not a good running song per se, it puts me in mind of a good moment. Some songs rotate off quickly - the record was MGMT's Kids (played once, ear worm, waste of $1.29). Ideally I'd add a song every couple of weeks, but they're so hard to find.
Recommendations?

I never liked Blur when I wasn't running but I liked it for running. I guess it is sort of rhythmic in a way that helps running.
I Don't Feel Like Dancing, Groove Factory. Perfect for starting a run in these dismal days of late fall. Like you I tend to pick up songs through different situations. I just don't have the time or inclination to search out tunes. A firend had set some bike riding from a go-pro camera to this paticualr number.

"California" by Delta Spirit
"Home" by Edwarde Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

I love anything more uptempo by the National when I'm running or getting sisyphean on the stairmaster, but they are my absolute favorite band, so.
I highly recommend certain Wolf Parade tracks, most particularly (and appropriately) "You Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son."
Aretha Franklin, esp. "Respect" and "Spirit in the Dark."
Outkast, "Hey Ya" and "Valentine's Day." Almost anything by Wild Flag, but esp "Romance" and "Boom." Many tracks by the Kills (if you like Black Keys and White Stripes, you must come to know this band), but esp. "Heart is a Beating Drum."
One summer I ran almost exclusively to Lupe Fiasco's album The Cool, and that was excellent. If you are hip-hop inclined, I recommend it.
I'm a doctor, mom, and (slow) runner, a lurker on your site for years, and I run to game theory too!

I like the album 'Some Nights' by Fun. Particularly the song 'Carry On' - which has a lyric which I heard as, "may your path be the sound/of your feet upon the ground," which seems so appropriate for running. However, Google tells me it's PAST, not PATH, which isn't as cool.
Muse's "Uprising" is fun. So is Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream."
I loved this song : Muse's "Uprising" is fun. So is Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream."
