Genius My Ass

A little over a year ago, I went from never listening to music while running to almost always doing so. (Thanks again, E! Did you know my ipod survived even an epic soaking in a thunderstorm?) (Also, the pants fit, and belated thanks for those ...)

My problem: I don't have enough songs. Turns out, my favorite music is not my favorite running music. For running, I need:
  • A driving beat
  • Lyrics -- I can't run to the podrunner music, for instance -- but the lyrics must be interesting or funny, unless the beat is REALLY good
  • A certain je ne sais quoi -- and therein lies the problem
So it was with great excitement that I tried out the Itunes Genius feature. Finally! A way to locate songs that are like the songs I like but that I never heard of!

Some middle of the night insomniac hours later, I have come up with exactly one new song.

So I need suggestions from the real geniuses out there: you guys. Here's a snapshot of a few of my current running favorites:

Help me out here, people. What am I missing?

  1. I see you have some Cake in there - I think anything from Fashion Nugget or Prolonging the Magic would fit your criteria. Perhaps certain Smashing Pumpkins tracks (bullet with butterfly wings, etc). I used to like working out to Black Eyed Peas before they were completely overplayed.

    I seem to be on a food theme here. Okay, have you ever heard Ozomotli? Try them!

  2. OK Doc Ma, this is a question/comment, sorry. I couldn't find your email b/c I am retarded. I have been running 2-4 days/week now partly b/c of your blog. Thank you, thank you. I have got the shoes, the wear, the socks, the ipod, and now some questions:

    1) what do you think of interval training, the walk-jog-run deal. Does it really burn more calories? Is it better/worse than my usual sloooow jog.

    2) I was reading a running FAQ site and the "expert" recommended speed walking for people who run slower than a 10min/mile. He said that jogging can cause more injuries, so if you are "running" that slowly anyways, you'll burn more calories/be more safe by walking briskly. I can barely do a 11 min/mile but have been jogging nonetheless. Do you dis/agree? I would love to hear your take on both my questions from another doctor's perspective. Thanks for your time and wisdom!

    P.S. some of the 90s boy band songs are great for running. The Backstreet boys', "I want it that way" has the perfect beat/drone. I totally hate them otherwise.

  3. try out Pandora.com and see what they suggest that goes along with what you already like!

  4. Ahhh! Short Skirt Long Jacket is my favorite!!! I'm not doing great with the running yet, but when I do I find I really like when "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" (Big and Rich) and "Girlfriend" (Avril Lavigne) come up on my ipod. :)

  5. ...Oh! And "Here It Goes Again" by OK GO.

  6. Ally and AJ "Break Up Song" has a great fast beat and always perks up a run; same with Rhianna "Pon de Replay". I won't listen to these voluntarily unless I've got my running shoes on...

    Apple has a site where you can find remixes of songs set to a certain beat - 150 bpm, etc. I can't stand listening to most of them, so haven't spent the money, but you can preview them and decide if the pace is what you're looking for.

  10. If you're going to go the embarrassing '90s boy bands route, I'd recommend "Larger Than Life" over "I Want it That Way" from BSB, and lots of 'Nsync songs, like "Bye Bye Bye" have good running/workout beats.

    (covering face in shame)

  14. I love Michelle's list!

    My iPod is filled with filthy West Coast rap, which I didn't see represented in your current list, so I'll leave those off.

    Australia by the Shins
    The Passenger by Iggy Pop
    Float On by Modest Mouse
    The View by Modest Mouse
    Cheated Hearts by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    Killer Queen by Queen

  15. I see several songs on your running list that are also on mine, so maybe our tastes are similar.

    These rather cheesy oldies work for me.

I want to thank you for emphasizing over and over again that running is not reserved for the already fit, or even for the almost fit, and for the reminders to go slow. without that, I'm not sure I would've bought the sneakers, much less put them on for 3 days in a row.

  17. Bust a Move puts me in mind of a few other favorites from the era

    Principal's Office (also Young MC)
    Funky Cold Medina (Tone Loc)
    Let Your Backbone Slide (Maestro Fresh Wes)

    I've had running buddies for the past several months, a little running club a few of us have started, so I haven't thought of this in awhile!

  20. I don't know if this list will date me as a "young person" and therefore worthy of sarcasm, but:
    Disturbia by Rhianna
    I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry
    Hot & Cold by Katy Perry
    Artists: Panic at the Disco, Dropkick Murphys, Modest Mouse, Gym Class Heroes, Pink, and now I cannot think of any more. Am also too lazy to get up and get my iPod to see what else I have.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If you can handle them...
    I'd say that the Rolling Stones have a decent beat with lyrics you can think about--- Gimme Shelter, Paint it Black, or Get Off of My Cloud

    Creedence Clearwater--Fortunate Son or Centerfield

    (ashamed to say it....) Britney Spears-- Toxic

    Kanye West-- Gold Digger or Jesus Walks

    Destiny's Child-- Check up on it

  34. I just my playlist, but I can't believe I forgot the best group to come along in years:

    The Killers.

    The album Hot Fuss has several songs that are great to jog to: "All these Things that I've Done", "Somebody Told Me", "Mr. Brightside", "Change your mind".

    The album Sams Town has my current fav: "Read My Mind". This is a fantastic song to jog to.

    Good luck!

  35. I second the Pandora.com suggestion. I've discovered many new artists and songs that I'd otherwise never have encountered. You "seed" a station with song(s) or artist(s) you like, and then it populates it with additional songs with similar qualities. You can fine tune the sound by giving each song a thumbs up or down. It's an amazing tool.

    speaking of running. I was doing really well till last month. i had been doing the MaggotTraining program successfully when someone convinced me to sign up for a 1/2 marathon. so i started training a bit more seriously for that, and was doing well. I'd gotten up to 8 miles of running with no pain, no shortness of breath, my heart was strong and I felt really good. I couldn't believe it was really going to work! ME! The Ultimate Sloth. Running!

    But 2 weeks before the race, I started having pain in my knee. It was horrible, so i took a break from training. My DH concluded that it was ITB Syndrome. I was hoping that with the break, I'd heal enough that I could run about 4 miles before i had to take a break and walk. But the day of the race I couldn't run a step. I ended up speed walking the whole 13.1 miles in 2.5 hours, every step was painful. Since then I've been a complete sloth...but am trying to get myself back in the saddle with exercising since my jeans that fit a few months ago won't even go up my legs now. Holyschneikey!

    So that's the latest. THanks for the motivation and also the running tunes post!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Def. check out Pandora... based on your list I'd suggest Santogold, and maybe the Clash (Rudy Can't Fail, Spanish Bombs, Rock the Casbah) and perhaps the Specials.

    I might just recommend the whole Grosse Point Blank soundtrack as well - both volumes!

    ReplyDelete
  37. thank you dr mama - i'm also one of your maggots who has never felt stronger or more fit. without your posts i never would have believed that i could be a runner. so thanks a million.

    george michael's "freedom". loved that video and song back in the day and it has the added benefit of being about 5 minutes long.

    "hot blooded" by foreigner is a new favorite. it's proved that i can in fact strut my stuff and run at the same time. it's not pretty but it is possible and definitely fun.

    jive talkin' by the bee gees and
    tiny dancer by elton john have both been surprisingly well- received additions. go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i know EXACTLY what you mean... but have no suggestions because i'm in the same damn boat! ack!

  39. My faves for running: Chris Brown "Forever," Rihanna "Disturbia," Katy Perry "Hot N Cold," JT and Madonna "4 MInutes," Kanye "Stronger." Also, the soundtrack to "Music and Lyrics." Yeah, that one's a bit strange.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can't believe nobody has mentioned one of the best running songs of all times - "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. I'm not a big rap fan, but the cadence is perfect for running to. And they lyrics are pretty inspring too.

    I also like dance songs - "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga is a good one and "Shake it" by Metro Station.

    Mustard Plug - Too stupid
    Pennywise - Bro Hymne

  46. You'll hate me for this one, but...
    Miley Cyrus-- See You Again

    Also try:
    Black Eyed Peas- Hands Up, Let's Get Retarded, Hey Mama, heck the first 5 songs on their Elephunk CD rock.
    The Jacksons- Blame it on the Boogie
    Earth Wind and Fire- Getaway
    House of Pain- Jump Around (I see you like hip hop!)
    Maroon 5- Shiver and Harder to Breathe
    Mateo- Can't Let Her Go from his Human LP (mateonline. com- just found out itunes doesn't have it!)

    Nearly anything by Ojos de Brujo (spanish) my faves are Ventilador Rumba-80 and Na en la Nevera

    Barrio Boys (spanish) Mayor Que Yo (heh heh reminds me why I'm running since the songs about men singing to an older woman)

    Sami Yusef (arabic) Ya Rasulullah- excellent beat

  47. Lots of great suggestions, and I can't wait to try Pandora.

    May I offer up Monty Python songs - I favor The Galaxy Song, The Medical Love Song (sick, I know), and Every Sperm is Sacred. The soundtrack to Rocky Horror Picture Show always makes me grin. Gnarls Barkley also gets me moving, as do Brian Setzer and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

    Jack Ingram - "Mustang Burn"
    Tom Petty - "You Wreck Me"
    The Mavericks - "Dance the Night Away"
    Fred Eaglesmith - "105","Freight Train", and "Benchseat Baby"

    (Can you tell I'm a big Fred fan? If you like funny lyrics that stick in your head you might check out some of his music. If you like country.)

  51. If you like running to the Proclaimers and Tub Thumping, you also need Big Country.

    Spoon - Cherry Bomb and the Underdog.

    I'll have to check my iPod.

  52. Don't have time to read all the comments, so forgive me if these are repeats. I always get a huge second wind in step aerobics when these two songs come on, so I added them to my MP3 for jogging -
    You Shook Me All Night Long ~ACDC
    Dancing With Myself ~Billy Idol

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow - I have not heard of many of these people but previewed them on Amazon and nearly copied your entire list. Now I just need to find the music.

    Thanks for the suggestions! I need all the help I can get!

  54. Love these songs:
    Just Another Day - Oingo Boingo
    Series of Dreams - Bob Dylan
    Alone Again Or - Love
    Message of Love - The Pretenders

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is the best workout/running song I have ever found.

    Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell

    It starts out slow and gets faster and faster. It is also about 10 minutes long so I end my runs with it and always finish strong.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm an old fart (50), so my list will reflect this, but here are a few I used to love in my running days (listened to on an old-school Walkman):

    Missionary Man - Eurythmics
    Kiss - Prince
    When Doves Cry - Prince
    Loverboy - Billy Ocean (hokey, I know, but it has a great beat for the early part of the run)
    Pasttime Paradise - Stevie Wonder
    Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
    Word Up - Cameo

    I know I'll think of a few more ...

    ReplyDelete
  57. This crazy bellydance-music type group called Raquy and the Cavemen. Some of the music is not so fast, but the stuff that is, is FANTASTIC for running.

    You rock my socks, doctormama!

  58. Here's a bunch of stuff I listen to at the gym which are cool:

    Steely Dan - Do it again and Reelin in the years.

  62. thought of ya this morning on my run:

    "Feel Good Inc." - Gorillaz -- this one really cracks me up, b/c both my HS track coach and my bootcamp instructor loved to run behind us and yell "feels good, doesn't it!" as we're all dying on whatever mile it was. :)

    "Everytime Tha Beat Drop" - Monica (if you're into hop hop)

    "It feels so good" - Sonique (techno)

    (When You gonna) Give It Up to Me - Sean Paul featuring Keisha Cole (hip hop)

  64. On a different but somewhat related note, do you ever run with your kid in a jogging stroller? If so, what kind do you use and would you recommend it? I'd appreciate anybody's input!

  67. Another doctor/mama/runner here. I've been lurking, loving your blog, and agreeing w/ pretty much every little thing you write. I'm so grateful for new running music from you and all the commenters. Here are some of my favorites (though I have to admit that I run really slowly, so songs that have the perfect beat for me generally don't for real runners):
    blinded by the light, manfred mann;
    million miles away, plimsouls;
    she goes to bed, author unkown, more, jason faulkner;
    girlfriend, we're the same, more, matthew sweet;
    I wanna be your lover, mountains, Prince;
    september, earth, wind, fire;
    smile, jayhawks;
    inertia, merry go round, more, wonderstuff;
    star 69, rem;
    needles and pins, juliana nash;
    ray, she really wants you, amee mann;
    beat surrender, jam;
    baba ghanooj, more, cavedogs;
    one more time, dawn can't decide, big gay heart, more, lemonheads
